I am So Fucking Tired of KenPom Disciples

This Computer thingy is pretty interesting
I understand how metrics can be interesting to the common fan (I even use them as a reference from time to time.)  What I do not understand is how one stat (that does not take the intangible aspects of the game into account) can be a viable predictor of a team's ultimate fate in the NCAA Tournament.  The stat in which i am referring to is Ken Pomeroy's vaunted defensive efficiency rankings.  I get it.. Villanova is an unpolished defensive team (According to KenPom, We're 69th in defensive efficiency,) but that doesn't mean that everything is doom and gloom.  Defenders of KenPom's rankings will tell you that no team outside the top 25 in his rankings have made it to the final four in the last decade.  Villanova's poor defensive metrics are attributed to poor perimeter defense and sending opponents to the charity stripe far too often.  Villanova's defensive deficincies illustrated by metrics can be attributed to a young team who had two key defensive injuries (Reggie Redding and Mouphtaou Yarou) during the early part of the season.  A young team will cut down on it's fouls and allow fewer open shots.  You also must take into account the intangibles, like a team that physically overwhelm's the other team (see last year's Villanova-Duke game.)  Just putting this shitty analysis out there as a little food for thought.   Remember, before you subscribe to KenPom's bullshit, he has the Big East ranked behind the ACC.

  1. Great article, and you'll see Pro-Pomeroy clowns trolling all over the comments sections in our games. I think Pomeroy had stats for the 04 season, when George Mason made the Final Four...Curious to see what the stats showed for that team, because Connecticut (a team they beat in the Elite Eight) was probably the most talented in the nation that year (6 FIRST round picks in the NBA Draft)

Great blog, I enjoy its sincerity yet appeal to the casual fan.

  4. If the bad KenPom defensive rating can be attributed to having 2 key players out for the non-conference, why has Nova's defense regressed in Big East play?

  5. And why did Nova lose to St. Mary's in the NCAA tournament?

  8. Great analysis - you basically got everything wrong based on what's happened. This is exactly what happens when you try to apply an uneducated "eye test" to counter straight mathematical facts.

It's posts like these that give even more weight to KenPom. Congrats.

  9. Maybe there IS something to the KP stats? Nah....St. Mary's just got lucky, right??

  10. As you can see on Ken's site, George Mason finished 2006 as the 18th ranked team on the country in defense.

  11. Clean yourself up, Ken Pom just took a steamer on your chest.

  12. Nova's performance against Robert Morris and then its follow up against St Mary's speak for itself...

  16. hell, Big East should be ranked behind the Mid-American (9th place team skooled GTown), Pac-10 (0-2 vs in Dance), Colonial and now West Coast. Maybe World Wide Leader will finally shut up about Big east being best conference.

  17. What a jackass. Your biased eyes do in fact deceive you.

  18. KenPom had Villanova rated above St. Mary's, so I'm not sure why you people are giving him any credit for this win.

  19. Wow, the first comment about George Mason could not be more off base. First of all, as any Big East fan will remember, George Mason famously beat Connecticut to get to the Final Four. Second, in 2004, UConn played Georgia Tech in the Championship game, so they couldn't have played GMU.

See, this is a time when "facts" would really be worth looking at. Oh wait, that's the name of this blog? Good thing there aren't any subjective subjective opinions here, like, "Villanova's Defense doesn't suck, OK?"

(PS: Defense > Offense <=> ACC > Big East)

  20. Weber, the point isn't that St. Mary's was better based on Pomeroy. The point is that he was saying that there was no issue with Villanova's defensive efficiency, despite what Pomeroy was stating.

And as we found out.....that's exactly what did Nova in.

  21. So what upsets you more...that Villanova got their ass handed to them despite all the help in the world from the officials, or that Ken is closer to right than you and Big East spewers are?

  22. Villanova sure did "fucking" good Thursday. Villanova sure did "fucking" good today. Great article. You're right, Villanova's defense is really good. They are underrated & shut down St. Mary's. Oh wait, scoreboard.

  23. You just got schooled homeboy.

Villanova is one of the worst 2-seeds ever after their showing or lack thereof in these two games!

  24. hmm, ok, but Villanova lost to St. Marys and should have lost to Robert Morris primarily because of offensive ineptitude, if they don't shoot 35-36% from the field, this thread probably never exists. Season avg was 46%.

  25. weber818, the whole point is that your offense doesn't always show up. If your defense can't carry games for you when that happens, you lose.

Anyhow, the original post here is a classic example of "the evidence inescapably leads to a conclusion that doesn't make me happy, so I'm going to come up with any excuse I can to ignore the evidence". I feel bad for Nova fans in general, but this blog post deserved to be called out.
