My e-mail to Orlando Sentinel columnist Mike Bianchi

Here's an email i sent to Mike Bianchi of the Orlando Sentinel.. it's a bit rambling, but that's fine.

Mike,

I have been reading your columns for the past few months simply because I find your willingness to shill for UCF comical.  The fact remains that the cons of adding UCF far outweigh the pros.  Yes it is a big school with a nice stadium and an emerging fanbase in a fertile recruiting ground, but at the same time they have a genuine fraud for a head coach, a less than sterling reputation academically, and they play in a less attractive market than Villanova.  Anyone who would add UCF simply to have a tenth member should have their head examined.  Why would a conference that has yet to see the implications of having 17 all sports members add an 18th when it still does not have a test case for the stability of the conference with 17?  Aside from the fraud they have on the sideline, I respect what The Knights have done on the field, but any school that would hire George O'Leary after what happened at Notre Dame, and his own practice facility doesn't deserve to be treated as though they are "big time".

sincerely,

Someone who does not ask college coaches about the sexual habits of their athletes

Funny email though, that guy is bat shit crazy.

  3. I'm a Syracuse alum, so I have no allegiance toward UCF. I just want what is best for the conference - and UCF is an infintely better choice. If you think the fact that George O'Leary lied on his resume 10 years ago should be a deciding factor when planning the future of the conference, you are out of your mind. Having dirtbag coaches like Nick Saban and Lane Kiffin hasn't really hurt the SEC's popularity very much.

I can just see the discussion on the conference call now:

"Well, gentlemen. UCF has five times the student population of Villanova. UCF has a new, 45,000-seat, on-campus stadium, while Villanova would have to bus to a soccer stadium which would, at BEST, in a number of years, be able to seat 30,000. UCF finished last year ranked in the BCS top 25, and beat Georgia in a bowl game, while Villanova is an FCS program. Also, UCF is clearly located in one the greatest recruiting areas in the country, as well as in a major media market. But you know what? George O'Leary, who could retire tomorrow, and who will almost certainly not be coaching the program ten years from now, lied on his resume 10 years ago. So let's go with Villanova."

Best case scenario: The football schools split off, bring Georgetown and Villanova along with them, and add UCF. A 10-team football conference and a 12-team basketball conference would work extremely well. Plus, if down the line Villanova wanted to make the jump in football, the league would be in a better position to absorb Villanova's initial struggles with a ten-member league already up and running.

I doubt that will happen, but I think it would be a good idea.

  4. As a Pitt alum, I would have to say UCF would be a great addition to our conference. Their football team was top 20 last season with a big win over Georgia. I know their basketball team is doing big things under their new coach. Once Pitt learned we were not going to be in the BIG 10, we want to improve the football side of this conference. We are going to be here in the long hall, and adding UCF would help solidify us overall. IF we eventually go to 12, Nova and Houston would be great additions down the line.

    ReplyDelete
  5. you really want an 18 member conference or a split? that would be a nightmare.

    ReplyDelete
  6. Nice email, that guy is an asshole. I don't even bother reading his articles anymore, all he does is bitch about why UCF is a better choice than Nova. Whenever the Big East & Nova drama is over, he will be bitching about why UCF is such a better choice over some other school. If UCF ever did get in the big east, he will btich about why the Big Ten should take UCF over some other school. It is an endless cycle.

    ReplyDelete
  7. @anon1 if you're willing to hire a guy with questionable ethics like O'Leary, that makes you more likely to cut corners in other ways.

    ReplyDelete
  8. Eastern Washington is a better team than Nova, just add them instead.

    ReplyDelete
  9. A BCS conference having to play a football game in a 18k seat stadium, now that would be a nightmare and an absolute joke.

    ReplyDelete
  10. UCF is a top 10 patent school and part of the Carnegie Foundations top tier research schools along with the likes of MIT, Stanford, John Hopkins, etc....

You obviously aren't qualified to comment on these matters with as little knowledge you have about UCF.

Bianchi may be over the top...but he's essentially correct on all points.

And you want to talk about fraud? That was a simple lie that he got busted for and was punished for...let's talk about how Villanova lies about their students grades and test scores to try and give them an edge for law school applicants.

    http://www.cheatingculture.com/daily-cheats/2011/2/23/villanova-law-school-fudged-data-for-rankings.html

    That's a bit more serious...

    ReplyDelete
  11. they will not be playing in an 18,000 seat stadium.. it's going to get expanded to 30k if they play big east football.

    ReplyDelete
  12. Could be/maybe expanded. Also do a little research before you spew lies. UCF has better academics than half of the football playing schools in the BE.

    ReplyDelete
  13. @guy talking about law school rankings: yeah.. guess whta they did with Mark Sargent? they fired his ass.
    UCF
    a) doesn't have a law school.
    b) hired o'leary when they already knew that he was a crook.

only 35 percent of UCF applicants finish in the top ten percent of their class.

you should pat yourself on the back on having SLIGHTLY better admissions standards than florida atlantic.

    ReplyDelete
  14. Hmmm... that email didn't sound biased. Even most of us Orlandoans hate Bianchi. Don't let him get to you. If you blog about his stupidity, you're just bringing him more attention.

    ReplyDelete
  15. all i'm saying is that as someone who thinks the big east is big enough as it is, Villanova is the better option. it's picking oat meal against a chocolate bar. the oatmeal tastes like crap, but it's good for you; the chocolate bar tastes delicious but it can cause some problems.

    ReplyDelete
  16. Not really sure how lying on a resume defines someone as a "crook". Also not sure how a coach could possibly define the value a school brings or doesn't bring, regardless.

It's a business and it's about $. A shitcan soccer stadium isn't going to cut it. The 2nd largest school in the country with brand new facilities just might.

    ReplyDelete
  17. The only thing that villanova provides is the fact that it wouldn't grow the Basketball side...that is it...nothing else.

Nobody outside a few thousand people go to the games or would watch them on tv in the Philly area.

    ReplyDelete
  18. Get rid of the basketball only schools...financially I doubt they bring much to the table....especially small private schools. Depaul, Providence, Seton Hall and Villanova can all hit the road. If you are in a conference you should have to be a member in all sports. Looking forward to a possible split.

    ReplyDelete
  19. @Rico
So you're saying that Notre Dame brings no money and they have no value?

    ReplyDelete
  20. I said "small"...and with only being a basketball school I really doubt how much money they bring into the Big East anyways... Could be wrong. NCAA is all about profits.

Notre Dame imo would be a school you would want to bring in for all sports. They would be an obvious choice over any other school in the country. However Notre Dame has been smart enough to build a football program where they share their profits with nobody, so they will never go to a football conference.

    ReplyDelete
  21. @moron blogger, who ever said anything about a law school?

We have the third lowest acceptance rate and the second best FTIC in the state. Please do some research before you continue to talk out your ass.

    ReplyDelete
  22. @Rico you're not very smart.. the big east has significantly less clout without the big east basketball conference as is.. without georgetown, Villanova, and sju the conference has some issues.

    ReplyDelete
  23. @anon 1:36- lying about your resume is an example of fraud, which would make you a crook.

    ReplyDelete
  24. @rico,
http://nd.edu/aboutnd/profile/academic-units/ Notre Dame has 8,445 undergrads.

    I'd consider that pretty "small"

    ReplyDelete
  25. TCU and wake are both smaller..

    ReplyDelete
  26. Still not as small as Providence, Georgetown, Marquette, Seton Hall and Villanova...Notre Dame also has millions of football fans where Nova has 6,000.

Without any of these schools they would be fine. They would gain more clout by getting rid of these schools without real sports programs. It was these institutions choices in the past not to improve their sports programs across all sports.

The whole point of expanding the football to ten teams is to improve its product. They understood this with TCU....Adding Nova will make the Big East the laughing stock of NCAA.

    ReplyDelete
  27. Citing the resume flap, especially when we're talking about conference expansion, is just grasping at straws, IMO. He's been employed at the NFL and NCAA levels for the 10 years following his firing from Notre Dame. His actions since then give you no reason to believe he or the school will be "more likely to cut corners in other ways." In fact, he's taken a slow-and-steady approach to building the football program, an approach that has drawn criticism from impatient fans. It's just the opposite of what you assert would result from hiring a coach that once lied on his resume. His body of work over the last ten years speaks for itself, so you don't have to just take my word for it.

Oh and UCF was awful that year too....

    ReplyDelete
  29. lol @ RicoSlim... got 'em!

    ReplyDelete
  30. villanova was also pretty bad that season.. 85 scholarships vs. 63 rarely works. apples vs. oranges

    ReplyDelete
  31. 2 Things. 1 - Rico, you're going to cite a game from 2006? Not a single player on either of thsoe rosters will be playing next year. Also, while it will be a process, Villanova will be transitioning to a FBS program. In case you didn't know, talent that should go to FBS schools dont usually go to FCS schools (I said usually I know there are exceptions, please don't come at me with the great players who have played FCS) so congratulations, UCF beat an inferior team 4 years ago, good job.
2- I think the guy who cited the law school thing, patented not reading an article before using it in an argument. Villanova was not improving kids grades to get them into law schools. Villanova Law was messing with the grades.

    ReplyDelete
  32. I don't think Rico was being serious. Calm down kids.

    ReplyDelete
  33. UCF would work Villanova in football right now too...ask Georgia. 115 D1 schools would work Villanova and they would for lose for another ten years at least. I am sure the Big East is adding a lot by having Villanova at 1-11 on the bottom of the conference every year. (1 win over FCS school)

It is pretty obvious the Big East doesn't want to improve its football status if they want to add Villanova.

    ReplyDelete
  34. @Jimmy nothing happened except Ereck Plancher

    ReplyDelete
  35. I can't believe Rico thinks we're not good enough for the Big East. We beat Auburn for chrissakes:

    http://www.sports-reference.com/cfb/schools/villanova/1938-schedule.html

    ReplyDelete
  36. hahahaha how about how we demolished Rutgers in 2002 and beat Temple last season. Temple beat Navy that season, Navy beat Missouri in a bowl game etc.

    ReplyDelete
  37. Yeah, damn O'Leary and his habit of giving his players genetic disorders...
Not to downplay what happened with Ereck, but it's irresponsible to blame that on the coach, at this point. He's not the first coach to have a player die on him, and he won't be the last. After the court case is finished, we'll get more information and have a better idea of what happened that day. I understand your desire to speculate, especially since you think that if GOL was responsible, it somehow impacts conference expansion (and you clearly have a vested interest in 'Nova getting the invite) but at least try to maintain the illusion that you are being intellectually honest.

    ReplyDelete
  38. UCF is the fourth or fifth most prestigious PUBLIC school in the state it is in.. that's why i don't want UCF.

    ReplyDelete
  39. "UCF is the fourth or fifth most prestigious PUBLIC school in the state it is in.. that's why i don't want UCF."

And that reason is irrelevant, and both it's inclusion as a criterion for inclusion and its resulting selection process are totally arbitrary.

    ReplyDelete
  40. name another BCS conference that has the fourth most prestigious public school in the state playing in its conference?

    ReplyDelete
  41. Big East with USF...Baylor in Big 12...UCLA in Pac10...Purdue in the Big 10

I am sure there are others

    ReplyDelete
  42. baylor is a private school, UCLA is number two, purdue is number two, and USF is exactly why.. the conference doesn't need another.

    ReplyDelete
  43. Villanova football would be worse than the 7th best school in florida in FIU and FAU...some things are just better in the south...you guys stick to lacrosse and hockey

    ReplyDelete
  44. Name one conference that uses an arbitrary criterion like "prestige," however vaguely defined, to select its potential members. BTW, if we joined the BE, we'd pass USF on your "prestige" scale in no time.

    ReplyDelete
  45. @Tony
    1. Villanova doesn't even play hockey
    2. Seventh best school in Florida? HAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHA Villanova was established before Florida was a state.

    ReplyDelete
  46. Yeah if this was the Big East Academic conference you guys would have an argument to be a member of the Big East....but this is for athletics.

Your athletics program might actually not even be top 10 in FL. Besides basketball your school has really nothing to offer.

I can name UF, FSU, Miami, UCF, USF, FAU, FIU, Stetson off the top of my head.

    ReplyDelete
  47. Hey Fact - great job getting everyone to dial in to your show today. In reading some of the very thoughtful comments on both sides of the "Villanova to the BE discussion" a few conclusions can be reached: (1) that there is a great deal of interest in whether (or not) the Wildcats will become members of the BE football conference from people OUTSIDE of the Villanova family; AND (2) these same people and the BE schools they represent are scared as hell of us entering as a football member -- and you know who you are. FACT, you've done a great job leading the discussion for the past few months. Now go out and get our students and alums fired up so that we fill whatever venue we will play in (and beat Rutgers, Syracuse, Pitt etc.) in just a few years. You see I'm old enough to remember us nearly knocking off Pitt back in the B West era and Pitt is scared of us (and we took care of Rutgers too!). Villanova moving to the Big East for football is going to happen...it will just take a little more time.

    ReplyDelete
  48. According to http://capitalonecup.com/standings.html
Villanova is ranked 15th in men's sports and 14th in women's sports.
I'm sorry, but I don't think I see UCF there.
I guess Villanova has a lot more to offer than you do.

    ReplyDelete
  49. Westbrook ran wild on Pitt that day.. If we had a defense that year, we would have beaten those bastards.

    ReplyDelete
  50. "Besides basketball your school has really nothing to offer."

    Right....

    ReplyDelete
  51. Rico - you prove that you know nothing about Villanova sports buddy. Go done some homework and come back to us after you've done so. For now take football off the table -- Florida schools are always going to be better in baseball -- and compare the other sports including basketball for the Florida schools to Villanova. Just do some homework before you spout off.

    ReplyDelete
  52. Yo UCF, Orlando fucking sucks, you had one good year, nobody gives a fuck, go get buttfucked by Miami FSU Florida and Mickey Mouse and leave the Big East alone, they don't give a fuck about you

    ReplyDelete
  53. Anonymous... that is the funniest thing I have seen all day. A credit card companies cup...wooohooo....

Just because your football team got points for being good at FCS football does not make your sports program even close to UCF's.

To quote your boy Bianchi....UCF is the only school in the country to have its football, basketball, baseball, women's soccer, men's soccer and women's indoor track programs ranked at some point this season.

If Big East is looking for quality football Nova is not even close to the answer.

    ReplyDelete

  55. how many NCAA championships has ucf won?

    ReplyDelete
  56. This is all about football man. The Big East is expanding to improve their football status.

how many division 1 football games has Villanova won?

How many fans do you average a football game?

How many miles will you have to travel to see them at the soccer stadium?

How many times have you beat UCF at football?

How many football conference championships have you won?

While you guys are hosting Monmouth next year we will be hosting Boston College on our school campus. The school who was too cool for the Big East.

    ReplyDelete
  57. "The school who was too cool for the Big East."

Tremendous grammar.. I didn't know that BC is/was a person.

UCF is a school you apply to because you wanted to go to Florida, but you also happened to stab someone in high school.

    ReplyDelete
  58. Is that the best you could do?

    A grammar comeback?

Oh by the way... how many hesiman finalists has Villanova had? UCF has only been able to send 2 to NY since we turned FBS.

    ReplyDelete
  59. "UCF is a school you apply to because you wanted to go to Florida, but you also happened to stab someone in high school."

Hahaha. I see you've stopped trying to respond to valid points and gone straight to ad-hominem.

For the record, I was rejected by UCF and accepted by Florida. I had to appeal to UCF's board to earn admission. So much for stabbing someone in high school...

    ReplyDelete
  60. Man its seems like not one person supports our move in football. I am a diehard Nova basketball fan, and don't really follow our football much. More of an Eagles guy. Just stink that we have such a lack of support from our own conference let alone the media.

    ReplyDelete
  61. @Jimmy i stopped responding to your points when someone suggested that Villanova would go 1-11 every year.

    ReplyDelete
  62. What you've just written is one of the most insanely idiotic things I have ever read. At no point in your rambling, incoherent response were you even close to anything that could be considered a rational thought. Everyone on this blog is now dumber for having read it. I award you no points, and may God have mercy on your soul.

    ReplyDelete
  63. This blog gets the most views and comments ever just by writing about UCF. I think that's all that needs to be said about how much better of a choice UCF is than nova. Nova would lose 100 games in a row to UCF.

    ReplyDelete
  64. @anon257- way to quote billy madison in hopes that i would think it was an intelligent, original response.

@anon545 yeahhhhhh alright.. considering this was my third busiest day out of the last three, only ucf fans are so butthurt and insecure that the feel the necessity to puff their chests at any opportunity possible.

    ReplyDelete
  65. hahaha...good luck trying to attract anyone to your games...

UCF/USF games alone would get more attendance in one game than Villanova would in a whole home season.

    ReplyDelete
  66. UCF is the second best PUBLIC school in the state behind Florida. FSU is a joke of a liberal arts college that has a circus class.

For the moron that tried to act like I can't read...the article is saying that Villanova was upping grades and test scores to make the law school more attractive to potential students in the ranking systems like US News and Report....but it figures I'd have to explain that to a WildCat.

Villanova offers nothing to the league in football...it's an embarrassment to the rest of the football playing members except for USF who only wants to keep UCF out. You guys are idiots if you can't read between the lines why you guys got rejected after being "offered". Nobody thought you would seriously do it.

Enjoy trying to get your basketball team back to it's short lived glory days.

    ReplyDelete
  67. 1. Why are FIU, FSU, UF, and USF harder to get into?

    2. Mark Sargent was fired.

    3. fsu has won two national titles, two heisman trophies, 15 conference titles, has had 33 consensus all americans. when you're doing this you do an equivalency formula between the profile of a school on the field and off of it. fwiw i thought adding usf back in the day was stupid, and i think ucf would simply be another school without a massive market stretching the conference out far further than it should already be.

    4. I don't understand how a team that has gone to 30 ncaa tournaments, four final fours (1939, 1971, 1985, 2009) can possibly have "short lived glory days".

p.s.: usf and fiu both have stricter acceptance standards than ucf)

    ReplyDelete
  68. You know nothing of Florida then...USF does not have stricter acceptance standards...that's why their a joke. They've recently tried to raise their standard to get away from this notion...but they've always been one of the worst public universities in the state except for certain programs (Psychology, Marine Biology).

Congratulations on being a homer...enjoy your short lived basketball success...i'm sure it'll come back soon.

Don't ever think anyone cares about Villanova football though...sad excuse for "backing" the program to try and play in a soccer stadium.

    ReplyDelete
  69. Acceptance standards aren't the only thing that determines a schools worth by the way...generally research output is a top criteria...and right now UCF is tops in the state for that...especially for our budgets.

Again...UCF is a top 10 patent school and part of the top tier of Research institutions in the Carnegie Foundation...I didn't see villanova on any sort of patent lists lately.

    ReplyDelete
  70. Your plans suck...your team sucks...nobody wants you except for maybe Cincy and USF...and their idiots anyways.

    ReplyDelete
  71. you can...always expect...an intelligent comment...like that...from pitt fans.

    ReplyDelete
  72. Oh the irony of PittFan saying "their" idiots. If you're going to call people idiots you'd better darn well know how to use the English language first.

And, note to UCF fans: If you were really as great as you say you are, you'd already be invited to the Big East. Stop begging for admittance. You just look pathetic.

    ReplyDelete
  73. Pitt fans are a bunch of pissed off PSU rejects, and UCF fans are a bunch of pissed off kids who were rejected by UF, FSU, USF, FIU and Miami.
