Norman White Dealing With MCL Injury

Good thing that Villanova has a week long break beforet their next game, because star wide receiver Norman White has "a little bit of an MCL," according to Andy Talley. The extent of said damage is unknown, but the injury was visible at the game against Towson. Hopefully he'll be okay by the next game.

Is Towson's Football Program in Trouble?

Trevor Walker

I already brought you the story of Towson running back Terrance West, but here is something new from Towson linebacker Trevor Walker, who wrote this letter to the editor to Towson's school newspaper about the practices of head coach Rob Ambrose. I want to preface this with saying that people get angry when they're refused playing time, but man this is some pretty salacious stuff.
This letter is being written on behalf of many current and former players of the Towson University football team. Head Coach Rob Ambrose has openly disrespected and mistreated members of the team on a consistent basis. This is also true of the Defensive Coordinator Coach Matt Hachmann. Please excuse the language but this is a descriptive example of a statement coach Ambrose made following a practice during the week of our game against St. Francis this current season.
In as exact words as possible he stated: “I do not care what your religion is. I do not care if I offend anyone. But even if Jesus and his disciples come in here on Saturday, we are going to fuck them up and get them the fuck out of here.”
That particular statement offended many players on the team especially those with strong Christian beliefs. On top of that, there are many other questionable things said we believe are crossing the line of ethics He has also made remarks on the lines of ruining players live to the point where they would not be able to transfer to any other school if they cross him to a certain extent. Some members of the team are scared to speak up because of the perceived personal repercussions if the coaches caught wind of it. But it has gotten to the point where many players have talked about quitting even in the midst of winning games.
There is also many violations in practice hours per day. We have been presented with practice logs that coach Ambrose submits weekly which we have found to be completely inaccurate. Ambrose holds punishment runs almost daily throughout the week at 6 a.m. but does not post them on any of his practice logs.
He also logs inaccurate time lengths of our practices and meetings. This is an issue we have already presented to the compliance office.
We are held to a very high standard as student-athletes to do the right thing on a consistent basis regardless of it is popular or not. In return we expect the same thing from the coaching staff and the athletic department. We have a very sincere love for our University and we know you do as well. We take it upon ourselves to represent the school well on and off the field because we know it is a privilege to be able to do so. We are sending this meesage in hopes that this urgent issue will be addressed and that the wrongs will be corrected in ways the University sees fit. We appreciate you taking the time to hear our concerns.
Thank you.
* Another former player also drafted this letter, but did not consent to having his name published.
If the claim about practice times is found to have basis, Ambrose could be in some serious trouble with the NCAA, who have strict guidelines about that sort of thing. At the same time, coaches are mostly dickheads and kids need to learn that.

Saturday's X-Factor: The Mercurial Terrance West

Last year, Towson running back Terrance West was the best freshman in the FCS football, and he was voted so by the media, winning the inaugural Jerry Rice Award. After running for 1,294 yards and a ridiculous 29 touchdowns in only 11 games, West looked prime to dominate this season, leading Towson to another season near the top of the CAA.

That wasn't to be, because seven games into Towson's 2012 season, it's unknown whether West is still even on  the Towson football team, and it's much cloudier than that as to whether he will be available to play against Villanova ever since he posted a (since deleted) tweet last week that hinted to his departure from the program. The next week against Old Dominion, West did not get a single carry in the game, and apparently looked detached from his teammates and his status for this Saturday seems to be up in the air.

If West is available, Towson is a very dangerous team, but if he's not, they're in a significantly worse position against this Villanova team, which has been playing very well lately.

Sheila Reid Signs With Nike

I alluded to this late on Wednesday, but she's made it official via her Twitter account. This makes her the first Villanova track athlete to ink a contract with Nike since Irish World Champion and Olympic silver medalist Sonia O'Sullivan did so in the late 90's.

Sheila will make her debut in a Nike kit at the NYRR Dash to the Finish Line 5K on November 3. Later in November, she'll be at the Canadian XC Championships.

Villanova's Most Favorable Matchup of the Season

Football is a game of matchups. A significant advantage by one team over the other can tilt things significantly in one team's direction over the other. Villanova's game at Georgia State this weekend happens to be one of those games. The 2012 Villanova football team runs the ball as well or better than they ever have, averaging 258.6 yards per game and 6.1 yards per carry. The 2012 Georgia State football team is absolutely woeful at stopping the run, giving up 212.7 yards per game, and 4.7 yards per carry while allowing 17 rushing touchdowns on the season. Every team Georgia State has played this season with the exception of one (Richmond) has run for more yards than their season average, which includes Rhode Island, who have one of the worst rushing offenses (and offenses) in the country. On the other hand, Villanova has rushed for more yardage than their opponents allow per game in every game with the exception of one (also Richmond).

If for some ungodly reason Villanova is unable to run the ball, Georgia State also has the second worst pass yardage defense in the conference, the worst pass efficiency defense, and allows the highest yardage per passing attempt of any team in the CAA by nearly a full yard while allowing a conference-high 15 touchdowns to only five interceptions. To put that in perspective, Villanova's only given up 15 touchdowns on defense all season. They have also have a total of five sacks all season, fewer than Villanova defensive end Rakim Cox has on his own

I didn't even mention that they're the worst team in the conference at defending kickoffs and one of the worst at returning kickoffs, because that would just be overkill.

I don't like picking games, but if Villanova doesn't win this game handily, I will be beside myself, and you should be too.

Villanova Ranked, Robertson National Freshman of the Week

In the newest top 25 poll, Villanova came in ranked 24th in the football championship subdivision, the first time all season that they have been ranked, and finally a recognition of their achievements on the field.

Also of note, freshman quarterback sensation John Robertson was named national rookie of the week by Sports Network. That comes in addition to being named CAA rookie of the week for the fourth time all season.

Villanova NFL Update: Darrel Young Scores a Touchdown

Today in the Redskins 38-26 victory over the Vikings, former Villanova linebacker turned NFL fullback Darrel Young caught a six yard touchdown pass from Robert Griffin III.

Good for D-Young.

John Robertson For the Walter Payton Award?

Over the past two games, Villanova freshman quarterback John Robertson has put up numbers that are nothing short of astounding. Aside from the turnovers against Richmond, he was awesome, and against Old Dominion, he was a one man wrecking crew. Through 7 games (six starts) he has already surpassed the 12 game total offensive output of Chris Whitney's sophomore season, and has beaten Whitney's career single game total offense career high, and his career high for rushing yards in a game. Through 7 weeks, Robertson is already putting up historic numbers.

So this begs the question of whether or not we have seen enough that he deserves national recognition. I think the answer is yes. First off, Villanova was just awful last year, and their fuck all contribution from the quarterback position was the primary culprit. This year, Villanova is probably one of the 15 best teams in the country this season, and they're getting historic production from both the quarterback and running game in general. John Robertson is absolutely the biggest reason for that.

Does he deserve to win the most prestigious award in FCS football? I don't know, but he certainly deserves to be on the watch list.

Villanova Dominates ODU 38-14

Going into today's game, I thought Old Dominion quarterback Taylor Heinicke was going to be the story. He was not. After the first quarter, Heinicke was a total non-factor though, as Villanova scored 38 unanswered points, including 28 in the second half to win the game 38-14. As mentioned earlier, Heinicke wasn't any good, but the same thing cannot be said for John Robertson, who was absolutely sensational the entire game, running for 189 yards, the ninth highest total in school history with three rushing touchdowns, and throwing for 151 yards and a touchdown while not turning the ball over a single time.

On defense, Eric Loper forced a fumble and picked off a pass to lead the defense.

Huge win today, be proud of these guys.

Villanova Trails Old Dominion 14-10 at Half

In a low-scoring first half, Villanova outplayed Old Dominion while squandering a couple red zone opportunities and head into the half trailing by a score of 14-10. Norman White had a long touchdown catch from John Robertson and Mark Hamilton was 1-2 on field goal attempts. On defense, Eric Loper had an interception and Villanova sacked ODU quarterback Taylor Heinicke twice.

Interesting fact: Villanova has already stopped ODU's offense more times in the first half than New Hampshire did a few weeks ago in four quarters and overtime.

BREAKING: Paul Harris NOT Involved in Syracuse Stabbing

We have a composite sketch of the guy who is absolutely not the chief suspect.

Tomorrow Just About a Must Win For Villanova

I hate saying a game is a must win, because it's so cliche, but tomorrow's Villanova football game at Old Dominion is as close to a must win as there is if they want to make the postseason. The playoffs can only be guaranteed if you have three losses. Villanova has two losses with five games remaining in the season. They can only reasonably lose one more game, and possibly two, if they're lucky.

Unfortunately, this game will be incredibly difficult, because ODU quarterback Taylor Heinecke is putting up video game numbers. Just watch:

Yeah, unreal stuff (especially the video quality). Anywho, Villanova needs to move the ball and prevent this from being a shootout. If the winner scores more than 40 points, it's highly likely that Villanova loses.

Radnor Is Ridiculous

This isn't Villanova related at all, but this most recent ordinance is the very definition of absolutely ridiculous government regulation for no reason whatsoever.

Take it away Main Line Media News

The Radnor Township Board of Commissioners approved the introduction of an ordinance that would prohibit low-flying airplanes from towing signs through the airspace above the township and that would also establish requirements for banners over public roadways during their Monday night meeting.

Citing noise and safety as factors of concern, the commissioners voted 6-0 to proceed with fashioning an ordinance that would prohibit banner fly-overs during community events or as advertising. The ordinance idea would also establish time limits on over-the-street banners and limit advertising to a percentage of the available space on them. Although the Goodyear blimp was mentioned, it was unclear whether commercial lighter-than-air craft would be included in the aerial signage ban.
Don't ever ask another question about Villanova's inability to build anything as long as they're in a town that has passed an ordinance when it is not likely to have ever been affected by such a disturbance.

John Robertson's Historic Season

Chris Whitney is arguably the greatest quarterback in Villanova history. It took him until his senior season to have a game with 300 passing yards, and he never had 400 yards of total offense in one game. Redshirt freshman John Robertson did both last night in only his fifth career start. Even though he lost, that's pretty amazing for a freshman.

Robertson has been historically good this year.

I hate recruiting. It's generally a waste of time for me, because they do such a good job of it over at VUHoops, but there's two particular developments that are worth noting.

Villanova Men's Cross Country Hops Up The Rankings

The New (unofficial) Logo of Villanova XC

After a ridiculous ranking that led to them being called "criminally underrated" on an infamous running message board, and their first place at last Friday's Paul Short Run, the Villanova men's cross country team is now ranked 12th in the country. The good news about this ranking is that I think they still may be slightly undervalued if they progress and stay healthy. Truly good news.

John Robertson Snubbed

It was becoming customary for Villanova's sensational freshman quarterback John Robertson to win CAA rookie of the week, so naturally you'd expect him to win it again after another very good game.

Well, if you assume that, you'd be wrong. Apparently for the conference, a linebacker from William & Mary who gets five tackles in a game is more worthy than 207 yards of offense and three total touchdowns. Now, this isn't really a big deal, because Robertson has won the award just about every other week, and he's on a better team than the guy who beat him.
