Leading up to the opening game of the Villanova football season on August 31 against Boston College, Fact on Villanova Sports will be counting down the days between now and the beginning of the football season using the jersey numbers of Villanova football players of the past. For as many numbers as possible, effort will be taken to introduce players from the current team, with the exception of "important" players from the past.a Also, it's a ton of work to get pictures of all the players, so it may be incomplete. Oh well.
On the 2009 national championship team, Villanova had two true freshman starters, Dan Shirey at guard and Eric Loper at cornerback. While Loper had started since the beginning of the season, Shirey first started in the game at Penn a few weeks into the season. Since then, Shirey started in the 2010 and 2011 seasons at center until hurting himself last season and being forced to sit out and take a medical redshirt year. In a way, that was a good thing for Villanova's future, as I said last September. Now, Villanova gets to move Shirey back to guard, his natural position so that they can keep Ross Hall at center and last year's left guard Kyle Wallace can possibly redshirt. Having at least six competent options at offensive line is never a bad thing, especially when they ran the ball as well as they did last season without one of their best players.
Shirey will be one of the captains for the 2013 Wildcats.
