Villanova football season countdown: 62 is for the 1962 Liberty Bowl team

Leading up to the opening game of the Villanova football season on August 31 against Boston College, Fact on Villanova Sports will be counting down the days between now and the beginning of the football season using the jersey numbers of Villanova football players of the past. For as many numbers as possible, effort will be taken to introduce players from the current team, with the exception of "important" players from the past.a Also, it's a ton of work to get pictures of all the players, so it may be incomplete. Oh well.

Although they lost 6-0 to Oregon State, the 1962 Villanova Wildcats are significant for being the final team to play in a bowl game. A distinction that it looks like they will hold forever. Rich Richman played in two games that day for Villanova, as quarterback of the football team, and as a reserve off the bench for the basketball team.

Center: 1998-2001

As the center for the Villanova football team from 1999-2001, Southern California native Robert Richardson was in the pivot for some of the most explosive offenses in school history, and the vessel through which Chris Boden and Brett Gordon, the two most statistically prolific quarterbacks in school history were snapped the ball and played a key role in opening running lanes for Brian Westbrook, the greatest player in Villanova history.

After his career on the Main Line, Babinecz had a three year NFL career, two seasons with the Dallas Cowboys and one season with the Chicago Bears. After his football career ended, he became a pediatrician, and is still practicing medicine in Paoli, PA.

Redshirted in 2012, probably will not see much time on a crowded Villanova offensive line in 2013

Villanova football season countdown: 67 is for Brant Clouser

  Brant Clouser

Leading up to the opening game of the Villanova football season on August 31 against Boston College, Fact on Villanova Sports will be counting down the days between now and the beginning of the football season using the jersey numbers of Villanova football players of the past. For as many numbers as possible, effort will be taken to introduce players from the current team, with the exception of "important" players from the past.a Also, it's a ton of work to get pictures of all the players, so it may be incomplete. Oh well.

Offensive Guard: 2007-2010

For four seasons, Villanova had the luxury of having two great offensive linemen to anchor the offensive line. One, Ben Ijalana was consistently heaped with praise, but Brant Clouser's role in opening up gaps in the middle of the offensive line cannot be understated.

Villanova football season countdown: 69 is for Andrew Berggren

Leading up to the opening game of the Villanova football season on August 31 against Boston College, Fact on Villanova Sports will be counting down the days between now and the beginning of the football season using the jersey numbers of Villanova football players of the past. For as many numbers as possible, effort will be taken to introduce players from the current team, with the exception of "important" players from the past.a Also, it's a ton of work to get pictures of all the players, so it may be incomplete. Oh well.

Offensive Line: 2001-2004

Literally the only person to be issued this number in the recent history of Villanova football. Berggren was a reserve offensive lineman for four years, and after his graduation he returned to the school to help coach the offensive line from 2005 to 2007.

It turns out that Villanova doesn't like issuing 69.

Matt Szczur has been red hot over his last ten games

Over his last ten games with the double-A Tennessee Smokies, former Villanova stud Matt Szczur is having one of his most impressive stretches of the season, hitting .389/450/.472 in that stretch. This has raised his season line to .298/.369/.393. Now, ideally his slugging percentage would be more than 100 points higher than his batting average, but it is worth noting that his line across the board is substantially better than it was last season, so he is not plateauing as many players do when they get to AA. For Szczur, AAA could be right around the corner.

Villanova football season countdown: 70 is for Bill Vogel

 Bill Vogel
Leading up to the opening game of the Villanova football season on August 31 against Boston College, Fact on Villanova Sports will be counting down the days between now and the beginning of the football season using the jersey numbers of Villanova football players of the past. Oh well.
Offensive Tackle: 2011-Present

One of Villanova's first real impact transfers in quite some time, Bill Vogel came in at a time when the Villanova offensive line was in shambles due to the graduation of Ben Ijalana and Brant Clouser, plus the season ending injury to Chidozie Ekweozor, the presumptive starter at left tackle suffered in preseason camp. After some growing pains his first year on an offensive line that needed to replace three starters, Vogel stepped up this season and was the starting left tackle on the most potent rushing attack in the history of Villanova football.

Vogel is back for one final season of eligibility in 2013.

Oh well.

Offensive Tackle: 2007-2010

Any discussion about the greatest offensive linemen in the history of Villanova football could probably begin and end with Ben Ijalana. Not only did he play left tackle, the most important position on the line, but he started and played at a high level at the position for all four years of his college career, becoming an All-American, winning a national championship, and ultimately getting drafted in the second round of the 2011 NFL Draft. Ijalana is currently on the Indianapolis Colts in the NFL, but he has suffered season ending knee injuries in each of the last two seasons. This season will be a real make or break for him.

2015 F Tim Delaney commits to Villanova basketball

Offensive Guard: 2001-2004

July 30, 1983 - July 25, 2004

After impressing his coaches in the spring of 2004, on a Villanova team with an offensive line that was in flux, David Reid was staring at a possible starting spot. Hust five weeks before the season was to begin, Reid drowned in a friend's pool, a tragic accident that ended the most devastating offseason in recent Villanova history, which began with the death of former Villanova player and longtime coach Lou Ferry.

David Reid was 20 years old.

In 2008, David's family set up a foundation in his honor to help underprivileged Philadelphia-area students.

Oh well.

Offensive Guard: 2011-Present

Kyle Wallace is an interesting story because he's a two year starter who will likely be moved to the bench due to the return of center Dan Shirey to the Villanova offensive line, and the resulting switch to left guard for Ross Hall.

Ryan Arcidiacono cut from USA team

Thanks to VUHoops for bringing it to the collective attention. Mislav Brzoja will still be competing in the tournament for his native Croatia.

I had heard this weekend that Arcidiacono had a few very good practices in Colorado, but I guess that isn't enough.

At least he has the right attitude:

 Defensive Tackle: 1999-2003

Another player who played in the era of Westbrook and Gordon, Mike Tesei finished his career at Villanova in 2003 with more than 140 career tackles and 12 career sacks, including six in his redshirt freshman season of 2000 which isn't bad for a defensive tackle. Surprisingly for such a symmetrical number, 77 doesn't have much of a recent history for Villanova.

Basketball: Villanova offers two new recruits

They had a team camp on campus today, and apparently Jay and staff were doing work.  There are probably several more, but these ones are unofficially official.

Villanova lacrosse to play Johns Hopkins in 2014

Next year, Villanova will play at Johns Hopkins in lacrosse, significantly boosting an out of conference schedule which already is shaping up to be difficult.

After a brief courtship with the Big East, the Blue Jays announced recently that they will be playing in the Big Ten for lacrosse. The Big East got Denver instead, even though Denver is very much not in the East.

Updated: Hopkins makes it official, saying that they will play Villanova in a "late season" mid week game.

As a freshman in 2012, Burke had two catches for 19 yards. The last time the two teams played against each other at PPL Park in 2011, a game that Villanova lost 26-16. In 2013, the Blue Hens will have a new coach.

Villanova seems to have an ally in Radnor's government

The Radnor Township manager, Robert Zienkowski made several comments at a recent township meeting that appear to be sympathetic to Villanova's desire to build along Lancaster Avenue.

Most interesting of these:

“The intent is to bring students on campus out of the neighborhoods. To put students back on campus is a good thing, not only for the community but for the safety of the students as well.”
Unfortunately, as a township manager, Zienkowski is a non-elected bureaucrat, so his sway on policy is little, but this still means that dissent against Villanova is not universal, and there may in fact be some people with sense.

Still though, local regulations are the worst.

In all, Farmer started two full seasons at tight end and scored three touchdowns, including one in the 2009 National Championship game against Montana.

Villanova baseball gets two players drafted

Despite their futility, the Villanova baseball team saw two of their players drafted in the 2013 MLB Draft, with pitcher Pat Young going to the Giants in the 13th round, and shortstop Tyler Sciacca going to the Cubs in the 27th round. Now, neither of these are particularly early selections, but Villanova gets a lot of players drafted for a school that is so consistently bad at baseball. How does that work?

Villanova football season countdown: 86 is for Matt Chila

 Matt Chila

Leading up to the opening game of the Villanova football season on August 31 against Boston College, Fact on Villanova Sports will be counting down the days between now and the beginning of the football season using the jersey numbers of Villanova football players of the past. For as many numbers as possible, effort will be taken to introduce players from the current team, with the exception of "important" players from the past. Also, it's a ton of work to get pictures of all the players, so it may be incomplete. Oh well.
Tight End: 2000-2003

After a breakout junior season in 2002 where he caught 48 balls for 514 yards with five touchdowns, Matt Chila was looking like a possible NFL player, having already secured invites to multiple postseason all-star games. Unfortunately, seven games into his senior season in 2003, he injured suffered a knee injury that was described by Tony Moss in his book A Season in Purgatory as "So gruesome that few who witnessed it could stomach recounting the tale," and as a result missed the rest of his college career. This injury was the turning point of a disastrous season which saw Villanova get off to a torrid start, winning their first six games, only to lose four of their final five games. This collapse coincided with the loss of Matt Chila.

So yeah, Matt Chila could ball.

Villanova football season countdown: 87 is for Clay Horne

Leading up to the opening game of the Villanova football season on August 31 against Boston College, Fact on Villanova Sports will be counting down the days between now and the beginning of the football season using the jersey numbers of Villanova football players of the past. For as many numbers as possible, effort will be taken to introduce players from the current team, with the exception of "important" players from the past. Also, it's a ton of work to get pictures of all the players, so it may be incomplete. Oh well.

Wide Receiver 2011-Present

In the summer of 2011, I went to a Villanova football practice expecting to watch Norman White dominate. Well, White was in a boot with an injury that would eventually sideline him for the entire season, so Clay Horne, then a freshman with only a few days on campus took most of the snaps in White's stead and dominated, making five or six ridiculous catches, and absolutely abusing the Villanova defensive backfield. So, naturally, I expected that Horne was going to dominate. Well, not quite, because Villanova couldn't complete a pass in 2011, and by 2012, Norman White was already back, so Horne has taken a bit of a backseat. This spring though, Horne was the most improved offensive player, signaling that he could be on the brink of a breakout season.

Villanova football season countdown: 88 is for Reggie Paris

Reggie Paris

Defensive End: 2011-Present

A smallish convert from linebacker, Reggie Paris was a rotational member of the Villanova defensive line last season as a redshirt freshman who looks to play a bigger role next season. Paris's two sacks was good enough for fifth on the team.

Villanova football season countdown: 89 is for Chris Polite

Chris Polite

Leading up to the opening game of the Villanova football season on August 31 against Boston College, Fact on Villanova Sports will be counting down the days between now and the beginning of the football season using the jersey numbers of Villanova football players of the past. For as many numbers as possible, effort will be taken to introduce players from the current team, with the exception of "important" players from the past. Wide Receiver: 2002-2006

Note: Chris Polite wore 7 when he was a senior, further throwing my list into a whack.

Of all the Villanova football games I have been to in my life, there are a few that stand out. One of those games is against Penn at Franklin Field in 2006, Villanova's first win while I was attending school there. During that game, Chris Polite caught a 57 yard touchdown on an absolute bomb from Marvin Burroughs. Villanova wound up holding on and winning that game 27-20, and finished the season 6-5 after beginning the season 0-3, which I think was the real catalyst to the playoff runs that would begin in 2008, and culminate with the 2009 national championship, as there was a core of freshmen on that team who saw a lot of playing time.

Villanova football season countdown: 90 is for Antoine Lewis

Leading up to the opening game of the Villanova football season on August 31 against Boston College, Fact on Villanova Sports will be counting down the days between now and the beginning of the football season using the jersey numbers of Villanova football players of the past. For as many numbers as possible, effort will be taken to introduce players from the current team, with the exception of "important" players from the past. Also, it's a ton of work to get pictures of all the players, so it may be incomplete. Oh well.

Defensive Line: 2010-Present

After injuries on the defensive line forced him into action as a true freshman, Antoine Lewis stepped up and started at defensive end, and played at a very high level, especially in the running game as Villanova advanced all the way to the national semifinal, where they lost to Eastern Washington. More recently, Lewis has switched to defensive tackle, providing Villanova with penetrating ability that they have not had at the position since the graduation of Darrell Adams after the 2005 season.

Lewis is a captain for the 2013 season.

Glad he didn't end up going to Pitt. Best of luck in the future to Ash.

Villanova football season countdown: 91 is for Osayi Osunde

For the next three months, we will be counting down the days between now and the beginning of the football season using the jersey numbers of Villanova football players of the past. For as many numbers as possible, effort will be taken to introduce players from the current team, with the exception of "important" players from the past. Also, it's a ton of work to get pictures of all the players, so it may be incomplete. Oh well.

 Linebacker: 2005-2009

I know that Osunde wore 23 his senior year, but using 91 here fills a spot.

Osayi Osunde, the Nigerian-born linebacker was a three year starter for Villanova and finished his career as the undisputed defensive leader of a team that won a National Championship. Led the team in tackles in both 2007 and 2008.
