Villanova football season countdown: 29 is for...

Leading up to the opening game of the Villanova football season on August 29 against Syracuse, Fact on Villanova Sports will be counting down the days between now and the beginning of the football season using the jersey numbers of Villanova football players of the past and present. For as many numbers as possible, effort will be taken to introduce players from the current team, with the exception of "important" players from the past. Also, it's a ton of work to get pictures of all the players, so it may be incomplete. Oh well.

Brad Finneran

Wide Receiver: 1994-1997
Brad Finneran had a very solid career, and on another Villanova team, he probably would have been the star, but he happened to have an identical twin brother who holds almost every single meaningful receiving record at the school. Brad's greatest contribution at Villanova was as a reliable possession receiver on the 1997 Atlantic-10 championship team for whom he had 47 catches for 727 yards and three touchdowns.

Also was a legendary intramural basketball player along with his brother.
Career Stats:
96 Receptions
1,252 Receiving Yards
6 Touchdowns

Matt McCann

Safety: 2011-Present

A redshirt junior who should be one of the key cogs of the Villanova secondary next year, playing close to the line, which is the key position on the defense.Unfortunately, due to injury, McCann was limited to only four games last season. His presence was missed as the defense regressed from the previous season.

Joe Marcoux

Kicker: 2005-2008

In his four year career on the Main Line, Joe Marcoux went from an inconsistent kicker with a strong leg, to one of the greatest kickers in Villanova history, which isn't bad for a player who was ostracized by his high school teammates at Don Bosco Prep for playing at a I-AA school. Marcoux holds the school record for extra point attempts and conversions with nine in both categories, and ranks as fourth in school history in career points. Added to his career statistics is the fact that he was the first Villanova player to donate bone marrow for Andy Talley's foundation, which is notable all by itself.

Villanova re-opens the Irish Pipeline with Siofra Cleirigh Buttner

Siofra Cleirigh Buttner- Off to Villanova

At the 1948 Olympics in London, two Villanova Olympians, George Guida and Browning Ross befriended Jimmy Reardon, a 400m runner from Dublin who was running for the Irish team and convinced him to accept an athletic scholarship to Villanova. Along with discus thrower Cummin Clancy and middle distance runner John Joe Barry, Reardon became the first Irish athlete to accept a scholarship to an American university. Over the next 50 years, some of Ireland's greatest athletes, including Olympic gold medalist Ron Delany, world champion and world record holder Eamonn Coghlan, world indoor champion Marcus O'Sullivan, and world champion and Olympic silver medalist Sonia O'Sullivan represented Villanova with distinction, helping the school dominate the Penn Relays.

In the late 1980s, Villanova's supremacy with Irish athletes began to dwindle, and by the late 90s, Villanova simply wasn't getting any good Irish talent, despite the fact that they were coached by one of the greatest Irish runners in history.

In the 2000s, Villanova began to look elsewhere on the globe for talent, and some of their most successful runners in recent years have come from Australia and New Zealand, mostly thanks to the success of  2002 NCAA indoor champ Adrian Blincoe, who became a Villanova assistant coach after he graduated from Villanova.

It also turns out that Marcus O'Sullivan has been stepping up his efforts on the Emerald Isle, and this year, his efforts have borne fruit for the first time in more than a decade, with Dublin native and six time Irish schoolgirl cross country champion Siofra Cleirigh Buttner, enrolling in classes for the fall.

With Emily Lipari graduating, Cleirigh Buttner is an immediate coup for the Villanova track and cross country teams given her pedigree back at home .

Darnell Greene

Defensive Back: 1998-2002

As a starter on the 2002 national semifinalist team, Darnell Greene contributed to one of the most underrated defenses in Villanova history, to go along with perhaps the greatest secondary in team . Greene finished the 2002 season tied for third on the team in total tackles with 83 and tied safety Gary Johnson for the team lead in interceptions with three.

Jamison Young
Linebacker: 1999-2002

Jamison Young's 2002 senior season may be the greatest season ever by a Villanova linebacker, which is saying something when you consider the great linebackers who have come along in program history. In that season, Young finished with 115 total tackles, 19 tackles for loss, 11.5 sacks, two interceptions, six pass breakups, and one forced fumble in 15 games. In 2001, he led all of I-AA football with five forced fumbles, and the team with 89 total tackles.

Billy Joe

Fullback: 1960-1962
Villanova's last ever bowl win was the 1961 Sun Bowl, a game in which Billy Joe was the MVP. Although Joe gained less than 600 yards on the ground during his career on the Main Line, he remains one of Villanova's all time great players because of his accomplishments as a professional (1963 AFL Rookie of The Year, 1965 AFL All Star) while playing with the Broncos, Bills, Dolphins, and Jets. On top of his accomplishment on the football field, Joe also was on the track team, and still holds the Villanova record for the shot put.
After his career as a player, Billy Joe became a coach, most notably for Florida A&M and was inducted into the College Football Hall of Fame in that capacity in 2007.

Running Back: 2012-Present

Former high school quarterback who is a part of a talented stable of Villanova running backs. If Villanova does any trick plays where someone other than the quarterback throws the ball, Underwood is likely to be that person.

Finished his career with 1,005 career rushing yards, and still holds the school record for most career punt return yardage with 649. In his three year career, Frank Boal led Villanova in rushing once, and scoring twice.

After his playing career was over, he was a sportscaster in Kansas City. Boal was inducted to the Villanova Hall of Fame in 2007.

Cameron Cross

Fullback: 1998-2002

Mostly a receiver out of the backfield, Cross finished his career with 106 receptions for 867 yards, not very shabby when you consider the fact that he was a fullback who had to share a backfield with perhaps the greatest receiving running back in the history of college football.

Curtis Eller

Linebacker: 1989-1992

Some numbers are particularly difficult to assign to a player. The first time I did this, I assigned 42 to Brian Hulea, who is Villanova's all time leader in tackles. This time however, I have decided to assign 42 to a different player, Curtis Eller, who was Villanova's first ever two-time all-American, a two time Yankee Conference player of the year, and is still second in school history in career tackles. After his career on the Main Line, Eller played with the Saskatchewan Roughriders of the CFL.

When his number was retired in 1998, Villanova head coach Andy Talley had this to say about Eller:

"Curtis is the best linebacker that ever played in the new Villanova era. He was the first two-time All-American at Villanova and the only player here named to the Yankee Conference All-Time Team. Curtis is easily one of the most celebrated players of any football era at Villanova, and he is the best linebacker I have ever coached."
Even from someone whose first language is hyperbole like Andy Talley, that's especially pretty high praise.

Linebacker: 2009-2012

Linebacker who increased his role in each of his four seasons on the Main Line, culminating with a 2012 season where he was one of the best defensive players on a resurgent Wildcats team who stormed back to the playoffs after one of the worst seasons in team history.

Dan Shirey

Center/Guard 2009-2013

On the 2009 national championship team, Villanova had two true freshman starters, Dan Shirey at guard and Eric Loper at cornerback. While Loper had started since the beginning of the season, Shirey first started in the game at Penn a few weeks into the season. Shirey started in the 2010 and 2011 seasons at center until hurting himself in 2012 and being forced to sit out the entire season and take a medical redshirt year. He came back in 2013 and played vey well as the Villanova running game was brilliant once again. It also had the positive consequence of allowing guard Kyle Wallace to redshirt last season, giving the Villanova offensive line an extra year with a talented player who will be able to start for four seasons.

We're halfway throught the countdown.

Pat "Hammer" Williams

Defensive Tackle: 2011-Present

After being stuck behind Villanova great Antoine Lewis his first two seasons on Villanova's three man defensive line, Pat Williams saw substantially more action in 2013 as Villanova played with four man defensive fronts more often. Williams rose to the occasion, finishing third on the team with eight tackles for loss. This year, Williams should be the primary defensive tackle after the graduation of Antoine Lewis and he is the team's top returning defensive lineman.

Also tallied 229 tackles and 40 tackles for loss for his career, tremendous numbers for a defensive lineman.

After a freshman season where he had over 100 tackles, Dillon Lucas cooled off in his 2012 sophomore season after a torn labrum in his shoulder. In 2013, he redshirted because of an injury that kept him out the entire season. Dillon Lucas does have ability, and Villanova has openings in the linebacker corps. Expect him to see plenty of action.

Howie Long

Defensive Line: 1977-1980

A Pro Football Hall of Famer, Howie Long is unquestionably the greatest pro player in the history of the Villanova football program. Howie is most famous for wearing 75 for the Oakland and Los Angeles Raiders, but he wore 55 at Villanova. Unfortunately, photos of him playing at Villanova in that jersey are seemingly nonexistent. Now, Long is most famous as the straight man to Terry Bradshaw on the FOX NFL Sunday pregame show and as the father of two NFL players, Chris Long of the St. Louis Rams, and Kyle Long of the Chicago Bears.

Tim Kukucka

Defensive End: 2006-2009

How many players have you ever heard of that broke their hand in the first half of a football game, got it taped up, then played in the second half with that arrangement? Well, that is exactly what Wall Township, New Jersey native Tim Kukucka did in the 2009 FCS National Championship game against Montana.

This week in Temple fan hilarity

Temple is pretty good at making a mockery of itself, so much so that this post is just to inform the masses.

Here's the scenario in its entirety:

  1. Jalen Brunson, son of former Temple basketball star Rick Brunson, is top recruit for the class of 2015.
  2. Temple (and many other schools) badly wants Brunson.
  3. In order to try to land Brunson, they plan to hire his father.
  4. Shortly before the announcement of his hiring, Rick Brunson gets arrested for sexual assault.
  5. Temple fans claim that the allegations are a conspiracy by Jay Wright
Even if Jalen Brunson does go to Temple, this is another example of why Temple is such a train wreck of an athletic program and why their fan apathy is so high.

Noble Ajakaiye

He is wearing number 90 this season after the graduation of Antoine Lewis, but Noble Ajakaiye is one of Villanova's top three returning defensive linemen. In 2013, Ajakaiye played 11 games, collecting 17 total tackles, five tackles for loss, and two sacks.

On the current roster, junior linebacker Dayo Kuteyi wears 57.

Marlon Johnson

Defensive End: 2008-2012

A defensive end who improved every season that he started, Marlon Johnson started every game on the 2009 championship team only to get hurt in the first game of 2010. Unfortunately, he only got three seasons of healthy eligibility as he had already redshirted.

On the current roster, freshman linebacker Jeff Steeb wears this number.

Patrick Haggerty

Linebacker: 2009-2013

Another case of a player who switched numbers from a less desirable one to a preferable one after if freed up. After having 31.5 tackles in the previous season, Haggerty was limited by injury to only two games and four tackles.

On the current roster, freshman linebacker Gregg Kobelski wears 59.
